Studies on the Storage of Apples (4)

Abstract
To control the side effects such as a respiratory increase and a tissue disorder by gamma-radiation, plastic film was coated on the surface of apples pre various to gamma-irradiation of 100 krad. Effects of single or combined treatments of plastic materials and gamma-radiation on the internal atmospheres, softening and shrivelling of apples during storage were investigated and the results obtained are as follows.
1. Combined treatment groups showed the higher concentration of carbon dioxide and lower concentration of oxygen in inner tissue of Jonathan apples compared with single treatment group of gamma-irradiation.
2. Partial pressure of gas in apple tissue during storage varied with the type of single and combined treatments, the increase and decrease of the partial pressure was more abrupt and sharper in the latter than the former.
3. The appearances of apples stored for 4 months at 10¡É and 6 months at 5¡É were exellent in the plastic coated groups and the combined treatment groups. Shrivelling and softening caused by irradiation seemed to be controlled by plastic coating prior to gamma-irradiation.
